Let’s Rethink Career Technical Education

What do you think of when you hear the words career technical education? Auto mechanic? Welder? Air-conditioning technician? Something else? Well, let’s look at what it really is and what it actually means.

In today’s job market, CTE equals long-lasting, in-demand skills for our workforce. According to the Alabama Department of Labor, the vast majority of the 28,000 job openings in our state require less than a four-year degree. These jobs can be found in a variety of business sectors like healthcare and hospitality, construction, automotive, manufacturing and many others.

Manufacture Alabama Launches Scholarship Programs with ACCS and UNA

Manufacture Alabama has launched two different scholarship programs with the Alabama Community College System and the University of North Alabama.

MA’s Iron and Steel Council will be partnering with ACCS, while MA itself will join forces with UNA.

Student Helps Injured Veteran Get Moving Again

Ashley Kimbel, a 17-year-old high school senior from Alabama with a knack for engineering, put her skills to good use when she met Kendall Bane, a Marine and leg amputee. The two went on the Today Show to share their stories.

Businesses, Students from Tri-State Area Converge on Southeast WOW in Dothan

Dozens of businesses and more than 4,900 students from Alabama, Georgia and Florida recently converged at the National Peanut Festival Fairgrounds in Dothan for Southeast AlabamaWorks hands-on career event, Worlds of Work.

Although the event is not new, the group added a fresh take on the experience. This year, SouthEast AlabamaWorks purchased 200 Google cardboard viewers and partnered with a local company to provide three virtual-reality videos for the students.

Employment Rate Continues to Soar

For eight consecutive months, the number of people counted as employed in Alabama reached record highs. In January, this number measured 2,123,398, breaking December 2018’s revised count of 2,120,769.

“People are working in Alabama. Employers are hiring in Alabama. We continue to report record numbers of people with jobs, and we are seeing fewer and fewer people counted as unemployed, which is what we like to see,” said Fitzgerald Washington, secretary of the Alabama Department of Labor.

FAME Launches Rocket City Chapter at AIDT

The Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education launched its latest chapter at AIDT’s Robotics Training Center in Tanner. The event was marked with a ribbon cutting, a tour and an informational session.

West AlabamaWorks! Gets Huge Grant from ARC

The Appalachian Regional Commission has awarded $1.5 million in grant funding to the West AlabamaWorks – Region 3 Workforce Development Council.

“The announcement continues an ongoing commitment for innovative economic development in Appalachia’s coal-impacted communities,” said ARC Federal Co-Chair Tim Thomas. “Investing in key regional needs now will benefit the region and the rest of the country well into the future.”

Central Region Welcomes New Director

Gindi Prutzman has been named as the new director of the Central AlabamaWorks Region 5. She comes to the region from Dothan, where she served as the president of the Dothan Education Foundation.

She received her master’s degree in Arts Administration from the University of New Orleans and her bachelor’s degree in Music Education/Piano Performance from Converse College in Spartanburg, SC.

PowerUp! Showcases Construction Opportunities to Mothers, Daughters

It was a different type of girls’ night out when approximately 100 mothers and daughters (and a few sons) converged on AIDT’s Alabama Workforce Training Center in Birmingham for PowerUp!, an event that brought them together to learn about career opportunities in the construction field.

Jay Reed, president of the Associated Builders and Contractors, served as emcee of the event, which included rotational information sessions and hands-on activities, such as using a drill, hammering a nail into a piece of wood and laying brick.
